Comic Book Thoughts

HI Guys,

I have had another really busy week so not been able to write full reviews on everything that I would have liked too, so here are just some of my thoughts on some books from last week. Enjoy!

Swamp Thing #17: I enjoyed this, however I was not a fan of the art. I do not pick this up on a regular basis and only picked this issue up due to it following on from the Animal Man; hence why the art kind of surprised me. I did really like the ending in this, and I am now very much looking forward to the next issues of both Animal Man and Swamp Thing. I just hope they don't drag on this next bit as long as they did with Rotworld.

Hit-Girl #5: This was absolutely awesome. This series has been getting really mixed reviews, but I have loved it from start to finish. I love the character, and I just love the world in general that Mark Millar has created. This particular issue was definitely the bloodiest yet, which is something I loved about it. Over the top Millar style gore absolutely rocks. I also think the set up for Kick Ass 3 was very nicely done too.

Colder #4: This series has been nothing but tremendous, and the same can be said for the penultimate issue. There was a brief recap at the start of this issue which I thought was really cleverly done. I also loved the other world and the creatures that inhabited it ( dogs that have the body of a hand?!?! awesome ). The art was once again top notch, and I am very excited for the finale next month.

Vampirella Strikes #2: The progression in this issue was awesome. We have been introduced to a new character that Vampirella will be working with in the upcoming issues, who I really enjoyed reading about. I also like how it set up for the next issue with a real big question mark hanging over the story line. This series is doing a great job at making me want to jump in to the ongoing Vampirella series; which can only be a good thing.

Wolverine and the X-Men #24: Absolutely loved this issue. There was so much going on which made it feel a lot bigger than an average comic book. The character moments in here were great as always, with a real highlight for me being the scene between Quire and Jean grey. this was something I did not expect, and I was very happy when it popped up. The last page has also got me very hyped for #25 which I should hopefully be reading and reviewing later today.

Colder #3 Review

The previous two issue of this mini series were tremendous. I think #1 was better than #2, but they were both awesome regardless. However, there was a big theme in the previous installments of leaving the reader with more questions than answers come the end of the books. It was frustrating me after the last issue that even though I was enjoying the ride; I did feel slightly lost. This issue, however, finally gives us some answers that we have been waiting for. We finally found out what Nimble Jack is, as well as what Declan has powers to do. Everything is starting to come together beautifully.

Nimble Jack. Oh, Nimble Jack. I called after #1 that this character was terrifying and reminded me slightly of Heath Ledger's Joker; well I was not too far off at all. This series is already very popular, and I can really see Nimble Jack becoming some kind of cult hero in the near future. The way he finished off a countdown near the start of the book just showed how horrifying he can be.

Once again, the other world looked stunning. In fact, this book as a whole looks absolutely fantastic. There are some panels that you just can not help but stare at. This series is the first time I have seen any of this artists work, but I will definitely be looking out for it in the future.

In this issue it has also become clear that Declan is in love with Reece. I assume there will be some kind of happy ending in two issues time, which I am looking forward to. I really don't think I could take a sad ending, which it could so easily do with this series. However, I think it will push me over the edge. After three issues I am massively invested in these characters, and I hope they come out the other side of this sane and normal.
Speaking of Reece; the last two pages of this book could have come straight out of a horror film. The art for hem was outstanding, and the tension in the car really jumped off the page. There is one panel where the desperation on Declans' face is so well drawn he looks like a real person.

I thought issue #2 of this series had taken its foot off the pedal slightly after an amazing #1. However, after reading this I can confirm that we are firmly back on track with this mini series. I am sure we will be given more answers in the near future to some questions, but things are starting to fall into place at last. If you guys want to read a horror book then look no further than this.

Colder #2 Review

Admittedly, I picked up the  first issue of this series to the amazing cover that it had. However, I was very pleasantly surprised with what I read so decided to pick up the second issue of this mini series. Once again I am very happy with my choices.

What I really liked about this issue was the fantastic chemistry between Reece and Declan. It was great to read, and I really do think that Reece is a great character; she is so easy to like. What was also great about their chemistry was that it also enabled us to get an insight into what  Declan is. Yes, there are still many questions that need answering, but we got some answers into what his past looks life after the events that made him what he is.

The flashes into a different reality were a highlight of the book for sure. It is still not clear how Declan can do this, and what exactly happens in this other reality, but it is fun to go along with for the time being. I am sure at some point everything will become a lot clearer.
We also got to see more of Nimble Jack, who is by far one of the coolest comic book characters to come out in the last few years. As I mentioned in my review of #1, he is a kind of Heath Ledger joker, but with added coolness on top. I have read other reviewers claiming he will become a cult figure in comics and to be honest I could not agree more. He is a truly great character.

The art once again in this issue was absolutely tremendous. I was slightly unsure at first while reading last months issue, but with each panel it grew more and more on me. This month it has become very clear just how amazing this book looks. The art really reached another level when the characters were in the other darker reality.

You guys should really check this book out. The art, along with Nimble Jack, make this book worth checking out alone; never mind the story. However, there are a lot of awesome ideas in this that are also very fresh; which makes this book a joy to read. There are three issues left and I am sure each one will be as intriguing as the two that have come out.
